Local Curlers Shine at Edinburgh International Curling Championship

On championship-type ice, 26 teams took part in this year’s Edinburgh International Seniors this weekend, November 17 – 19. The ice made sure the play was of a great standard.

Ten ladies’ teams played two sections of five in a round robin format. The semi-finalists were skipped by Barbara Watt, Jackie Lockhart, Margaret Robertson, and Elaine Semple. Two close semis meant Edinburgh Ladies member Barbara faced former Scotland international Jackie in the final. In a close final, Jackie just nipped it 5-3. The winning team was Jackie Lockhart, Christine Cannon, Isobel Hannen, and Margaret Robertson.

The men’s competition was played in two sections, using a schenkel system. After four games and lots of good play, skips Callum Harvey, Gordon Muirhead, Basil Baird, and Don Stark went through to the semi-finals.

Basil and Don had a titanic semi-final, with Mid Calder member Basil just going through. Haddington’s Calum was just too good for Gordon and headed to the final.

The final was a bit one-sided, with Calum winning easily. Just one game too many in a hectic schedule for birthday-boy Basil? The winning team was Calum Harvey, Robin Aitken, Brian Fleming, and John Steven.

My thanks go to my committee, the ice staff, and the kitchen and bar staff who coped brilliantly all weekend.

Thanks to everybody,

Trevor W.H. Dodds
